World War I Exhibition

An Exhibition entitled “News From the Past” commemorating the people of Sligo’s Involvement in World War 1 can be viewed at Sligo County Museum from 10th June to 28th September 2014. The exhibition will give the opportunity to visitors to view newspapers from the period, photos, letters, medals and other memorabilia from World War 1. For the first time the names of all the Sligo people who died in World War 1, including their address, rank, unit, place and date of death will be displayed. A book of condolence to their memory will be opened thus giving members of the public an opportunity to pay tribute to the people from Sligo who lost their lives in World War 1. This project has been funded by the Peace III Programme through the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by Sligo County Council on behalf of Sligo Peace & Reconciliation Partnership Committee. IMPAC Award Shortlist announced!

Ten novels have been shortlisted for the 2014 International IMPAC DUBLIN Literary Award, managed by Dublin City Libraries. The list includes five novels in translation from Argentina, Colombia, France, Norway, and The Netherlands and novels from Australia, Ireland, Malaysia, the UK and the USA.

The IMPAC DUBLIN Award, an initiative of Dublin City Council, is worth €100,000 to the winner and is the world’s most valuable annual literary award for a single work of fiction published in English.

The Lord Mayor will announce the winner on 12th June 2014.

The shortlisted titles, announced by The Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Henry Upton, in Dublin are:


1.The Detour by Gerbrand Bakker, (Dutch) translated by David Colmer. Published by Harvill Secker.
2.Questions of Travel by Michelle De Kretser (Sri Lankan / Australian) Published by Allen & Unwin.
